Two nights in October 1964.

Between the Edinburgh and Dundee shows of their autumn tour, The Beatles slept two nights on the banks of Loch Earn. The Strathearn Herald of Saturday 24 October 1964 wrote it all down, and the hotel reprints every word.

Four travel weary tourists from Liverpool.

Mon 19 OctLate on Monday night, with rain dripping off floodlit trees, four travel weary tourists from Liverpool arrive. Four juicy steaks after a hard day's night at their Edinburgh show.

Tue morningJohn and Paul, who shared a chalet, out first for a walk on the shore, trying to entice a dog into the loch. George and Ringo take breakfast in bed.

Tue afternoonJohn and Paul try their hand at boating and beat up the loch for half an hour, before the Dundee concert. Police disperse the car loads of fans who follow them back.

Wed 21 OctOnly Paul appears in public before the limousine collects the famous four from their chalet for Glasgow. He wistfully wished he had a cottage here.

The Herald's reporter caught the mood exactly: The Beatles liked this part of the countryside and found the peace and quiet of St Fillans a pleasant change. They need a lot of sleep on their tours, the paper concluded, and the quiet of St Fillans is the place to get it. Sixty years on, that part has not changed.
